When you think of the stereotypical women in the early 1900’s you think of a stay at home mother that cooks and cleans, and has everything spotless for when the man of the house arrives home after a long day at work. Women have never been the centre of attention in the household, and that same pattern followed into the films during these times. Women in films have never had a major role like the male, even in films that claim to have strong female roles there is still a male character that they fall in love with of come into contact with them at some point. Movies have also sexualized the female bodies into objects just for the men’s disposal. And when they aren’t being portrayed as merely just objects they are being labeled as “crazy”. In Ericka Thomas’ story Punishing Unfaithful Wives and Working Mothers: Messages of Postfeminism in Contemporary Film she takes about the film Unfaithful. She talks about how in the movie there is an affair that goes on between the wife and a French book dealer she has met on the streets. The husband of the wife then goes on to murder the man she had an affair with. But in the end the husband and wife lived happily ever after. There is so many things wrong with the film it’s hard to start with just one issue. One of the first major issues is the betrayal the women has done to the male. It is now because of the actions done by the wife that their family is having issues. But what she has done is much worse than her husband’s actions towards the man having the affair; murder. No matter what the female character in the film is in the wrong, the man only had to do whatever he had to. This double-standard in a major issue in postfeminism views of these films. Why are male and female character held to different standards in the cinema. For example, if the roles in the film Unfaithful were reversed, it would still be the wife’s issue for being in the wrong for murder, not the husbands for cheating. There is a major stigma about how the women is always wrong and the male is always right in any type of relationship. These films are always showing that a woman is only truly happen when she is back into the normal housewife roles, if she trying to stray away from these roles she will never be happy again. There is a controversy that when a female does these bad things like go back to get an education, or work a full time job, that she is becoming a horrible housewife. She is putting herself before her family and in historic times this was unheard of. Wanting equally in society needs to start with the films and media sources that are getting shoved down the throats of everyone. When we look at the films and go to the movies we are reminded time and time again that this is a “norm”. But it isn’t a norm. It’s a structure that society has given to us and it is time to change it. Women are not just objects anymore, we are not always wrong, and we do have a voice (and a good one at that). Women are more than just wives and mothers, they are human.
