How Manly is Manly? (Week 7)

Hypermasculinity is a psychological term for the exaggeration of male stereotypical behavior, such as an emphasis on physical strength, aggression, and sexuality. When you think of a stereotypical male you tend to think muscular man, with an egoistic personality, who wants to always fight, and can get any lady at his choosing.  Media has always had an opinion on how females have been portrayed in films yet there has never been much talk about how men are being stereotyped. There is something to be said about the power and control most men have in the films we watch. Very few films have a main female role in general but then you look at the male roles that are being acted and they are still being stereotyped, even if they aren’t the main character. Women’s rights have been talked about extensively with the desire to see more diversity on the television screens, but what about men’s? It comes down to the topic of who is actually the viewers for these movies? Is it the male or female population that depends on the success of a movie? Men that see these actions movies are intrigued by the plot but tend to overlook this body image that is being portrayed to them unconsciously, then you have women that then go to these movies not because of the plots but for the actors playing these roles. Most feminists would argue that the female body has been objectified on the screens yet not many would like to consider maybe men have been subject to these standards as well. Manhood is another part of every males aging process. It is considered the transition between being a child and becoming a man. Manhood is unavoidable and every male must go through it, yet they all experience it a little different. There are always things that will be taught to little boys that aren’t taught to little girls as they grow up. “Don’t cry, only girls cry.” “You kick like a girl.” “Don’t show your fear to anyone, always stand your ground.” There is a huge stigma about how boys are meant to grow up and how females are meant to grow up. Boys aren’t meant to go through a phase of compassion and loving when they are growing, they are told to be independent and have to rely on no one. All of history we see this stereotypes being looked at. There will always be this image of a perfect body, whether it is the body of a male or female. More talk just needs to be done with the male body. There is not enough talk about how they have a stereotype of a perfect male body without most people not even realizing it’s there. We are shown videos and pictures of the perfect male body time and time again, yet for most the possibility of obtaining that body is nearly impossible. All different body types give the idea of a tall, muscular, but slender body, a great appeal to it but to get one is much more difficult. Some men are tall and slender but don’t have much muscle, nor fat to change into muscle. Other have large amounts of muscle but aren’t as tall as the average female, both of these observations giving doubt to the males about their actual masculinity. There are many judgements that have been given to men just like there has females, the only problem is that females like to talk about these issues while men would rather forget about them and keep these comments to themselves. The history of these men being portrayed has been in films for as long as we can remember. There has always been a good looking male actor as the main character, yet recently the body language and body types have changed for these actors. In the past one of the key ideas of sex was forbidden on the screen yet people lived for the scandalous pulling of each other into the closets. The idea that you know what these two people are doing yet you can’t see it. Now masculinity has been shown with how many girls you can get, how much muscle you have on your chest and how uninterested you seem. These ideas about how a male should show his hypermasculinity have changed in just the past couple years to extreme measures. Now more than ever men are going on crazy diets, injecting themselves with human growth hormone and steroids, and becoming more and more involved in sex without the relationship aspect. A shift in the perfect male figure has changed from introvert to extrovert extremely in the past, making it very difficult to tell what the future holds for the men of the new era.
