For the last couple months we have been shown videos and films that have depicted gender and sexuality in history; some films more shocking than others. This course took us through a journey of exploring how history has impacted and changed our views and thoughts on gender and sexuality, and gave us a greater appreciation for the complexity of how society views femininity and masculinity. Gender and sexuality is a topic that has grown to be more accepting throughout the years, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need to talk about the history of these topics and how society got to the point at which we are today. The way people act, talk, dress and even speak define how we categorize and label them. We put people into these little boxes that we believe they should still be in because that is what it was in the past. The norms for sexuality and gender have changed so much in the past 10 years everyone can start to feel comfortable with who they truly are. The films that were observed served a major purpose for showing just how critical gender and certain sexualities were in history. Certain points in history some wish never happened, horrible things happen to many innocent people just due the mere fact of their gender and/or sexuality. These struggles and barriers that people had to overcome have given the future a hope for a life without discrimination and biased favorings. Taking this course has given me a better understanding for the way that media portrays sexuality and gender. The way I look at ads on television, on billboards, and even in music has drastically changed since taking this course. This portfolio will take you through a journey of how history has made such a remarkable impact on gender and sexuality, and how it is finally starting to be accepted today.
