Lesbians and Gays as Mythical Creatures (Week 10)

Being who you are is a movement that has been taken into everything we do in society. Lately there has been a great deal of support for those that come out and say they are a man that likes other men or a female that likes other females; summed up in two terms gay and lesbian. The LGBT community has grown in even just the past 5 years to something no one could have ever imagined. There is so much more talk and acceptance in the world with homosexuality. But just like most things that go hand in hand with feminism, there is still a long road ahead. Although the accept has gone up, and law prohibit discrimination, it still is happening. People that grew up in a generation that had intolerance for these people still have a hard time accepting the fact that these people exist. Some believe that these people aren’t truly born this way but yet, “that women are “innately sexually oriented” toward men, or by Lessing, that the lesbian choice is simply an acting-out of bitterness toward men, are by no means theirs alone; they are widely current in literature and in the social sciences” (Adrienne Rich, Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence). People still would rather believe that this is just a phase than who you truly are. Many religions go against homosexuality so that doesn’t help the movement when you’re trying to get the older generations to understand and accept this fact. There is a stigma that says that in a marriage there must be one man and one female and they will have children that one day will have their own spouse and create their own children. Some people are so set on this idea, more so a norm of the 1920, about how people should live their life they are blind to the fact that the world is changing and you can’t stop it. In today’s time many young women and men aren’t even getting married. They would rather be a bachelor or a bachelorette for the rest of their life, something that was very much frowned upon in the past. With the change in time there is so much room for growth and expression that anyone can be whatever or whoever they please. As a society we need to accept the fact that we don’t all fit into what is considered a “perfect box”. We are all different and unique in our own ways and that what makes the world such a diverse place. The world would be a very dull place if we didn’t have the diversity that we need.
